Arlington/Lexington United for Justice with Peace is a local peace group of Arlington and Lexington residents. We formed a peace group in the Spring of 2002 as it became clear that the events of September 11, 2001 were being used to wage war, which as individuals, we strongly opposed. We feel there is a moral imperative to holding open the space for dissent in our community. We vigil each week, on Mondays from 5:30-6:30, in the center of town (intersection of Mass. Ave. and Pleasant St.). We hold community events - ranging from educational forums on issues of pressing concern – the assault(s) on Gaza, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, protecting civil liberties and standing up for immigrant rights. We oppose the Level IV Bio-terror warfare research lab proposed by Boston University and Arlington is on record as opposing this project, along with other neighboring communities. Similarly, we call for an end to the ICE raids that have separated women from their children (sometimes nursing mothers) and have recruited town-wide support for an inclusive, welcoming climate for immigrants. We are currently working on campaigns to cut the military budget, continuing our opposition to the war in Iraq, opposed to increasing troops in Afghanistan, and working to prevent a widening war in Pakistan and Iran. We always need more people to become involved, all citizens need to concern themselves with the crucial issues that affect our community life. Every missile built, every dollar spent on waging war, takes money away from health-care, education, public transportation and taking care of people and planet earth.
